National Conference on “Migration and Displacement in Ethiopia: Policies, Practices and Durable Solutions” at Jigjiga University

Between February 27 and 28, FES AMPC supported the organization of the seventh National Migration Conference under the Jigjiga University Migration series, bringing together researchers, policy makers and practitioners in governmental and non-governmental authorities.

The Seventh Jigjiga Migration Series, organized by Jigjiga University's Institute of Migration Studies, took place on 27 and 28 February 2025 in Jigjiga, Ethiopia. This annual conference brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including researchers, policymakers, practitioners, academicians, students, and government authorities, to engage in meaningful discussions about migration and displacement in Ethiopia. With the theme "Migration and Displacement in Ethiopia: Policies, Practices, and Durable Solutions," the event sought to examine the complex relationship between migration, displacement, conflict, and climate change in the Ethiopian context.

The conference aimed to create a platform for cross-disciplinary dialogue and foster collaboration between various sectors working on migration, displacement, and related issues. It sought to explore not only the causes of migration and displacement in Ethiopia but also to examine the policies and practices in place to address these challenges. As migration and displacement are increasingly interconnected with climate change and conflict, the conference aimed to deepen understanding of the dynamics at play and identify durable solutions to these pressing issues.

Over the course of the conference, more than fifteen research papers were presented, each addressing different aspects of migration, displacement, conflict, and climate change in Ethiopia. The presentations sparked insightful debates, with active discussions following each academic paper, which allowed for the exchange of ideas and the exploration of new perspectives. These discussions provided valuable insights into the current state of migration and displacement issues in the country, as well as potential pathways toward durable solutions.

In the spirit of the whole of government and whole-of-society approaches, FES AMPC will continue to support initiatives that explore migration governance at local, national, regional and global levels.
